What is Air Pollution?

Air pollution is the presence of harmful substances in the air we breathe, including smoke, dust, toxic gases, and chemicals. During festivals, air pollution often increases sharply due to certain activities that release pollutants into the atmosphere.

How Festivals Contribute to Air Pollution

  1. Firecrackers (e.g., Diwali, New Year’s Eve)

  • Release toxic gases like sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals.

  • Increase levels of PM2.5 and PM10 (tiny particles that can enter lungs).

  • Cause smog and reduce air visibility.

  1. Burning of Waste (e.g., Holika Dahan, Dussehra)

    • Burning wood, waste, and effigies releases carbon monoxide and other pollutants.

  2. Increased Vehicle Use

    • Traffic congestion during festivals increases exhaust fumes (CO₂, NOx, etc.).

  3. Mass Gatherings & Decorations

    • Use of diesel generators, incense, and chemical sprays adds to indoor and outdoor pollution.

Effects of Festival Air Pollution On Human Health:

  1. Breathing problems (asthma, bronchitis, etc.)

  2. Irritation of eyes, throat, and nose

  3. Worsening of heart and lung diseases

  4. Long-term exposure can lead to cancer and reduced life expectancy

Vulnerable Groups:

  • Children, elderly, and people with respiratory issues are at higher risk.

  • Pregnant women may face complications due to poor air quality.

On Environment:

  • Polluted air harms plants and animals.

  • Increases greenhouse gases and contributes to climate change.

Example: Post-Diwali Air Quality (India)

  • In cities like Delhi, AQI (Air Quality Index) can cross 500+ (Hazardous) just after Diwali due to fireworks and stubble burning.

  • Normal AQI should be below 100 for healthy air.

Ways to Reduce Air Pollution During Festivals

  1. Avoid or minimize firecracker use – Choose green crackers if needed.

  2. Promote laser or light shows as alternatives.

  3. Use eco-friendly materials for decorations and rituals.

  4. Carpool or use public transport during festival outings.

  5. Create awareness about the health and environmental impacts.

  6. Support community-level celebrations to limit individual pollution.

Celebrate Without Compromise

Festivals are about joy, unity, and tradition - not pollution. By adopting eco-conscious habits, we can ensure cleaner air for everyone and make our festivals truly meaningful.
