Excessive mobile phone usage can have several effects on hearing health. These effects stem primarily from prolonged exposure to loud volumes, especially through headphones or earbuds, as well as electromagnetic radiation and behavioral patterns associated with device use.

1. Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)

ree
  • Cause: Listening to music, videos, or calls at high volume through headphones or earphones.

  • Effect: Permanent damage to hair cells in the inner ear, leading to gradual hearing loss.

  • Safe Limit: Experts recommend keeping volume below 60% of the maximum and limiting listening to under 60 minutes at a time (60/60 rule).

2. Tinnitus

  • Cause: Prolonged or repeated exposure to loud sounds via mobile devices.

  • Effect: Ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in the ears that may be temporary or permanent.

3. Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS)

  • Cause: Short-term exposure to loud sounds.

  • Effect: Temporary hearing loss or muffled hearing, usually recovering after a few hours or days.

4. Increased Ear Infections

Increased Ear Infections
  • Cause: Sharing earbuds or using unclean devices.

  • Effect: Can lead to ear canal infections, which might cause temporary hearing difficulties.

5. Electromagnetic Radiation Concerns (Still Inconclusive)

  • Cause: Mobile phones emit low levels of non-ionizing radiation.

  • Effect: No conclusive evidence links phone radiation directly to hearing loss, but some studies suggest long-term exposure may affect the auditory nerve or inner ear function.

6. Impact on Children and Adolescents

  • Children’s ears are more sensitive to noise exposure.

  • Early and prolonged exposure to loud sounds can lead to early-onset hearing problems.

Prevention Tips

Impact on Children and Adolescents
  • Use volume-limiting features .

  • Use over-ear headphones instead of in-ear ones, which deliver sound closer to the eardrum.

  • Follow the 60/60 rule (max 60% volume for no more than 60 minutes at a time).

  • Avoid using phones in noisy environments, which leads to turning up the volume.

  • Regular hearing checks, especially if you experience ringing or muffled sounds.
