Otomycosis is a fungal infection of the external ear canal. It’s sometimes called “fungal otitis externa.” It’s more common in warm, humid environments and often affects people who swim frequently or use ear drops or hearing aids that trap moisture.
Causes
Most often caused by fungi like Aspergillus or Candida species.
Moisture and warmth in the ear canal create a good environment for fungal growth.
Symptoms
Itching in the ear (often intense)
Discomfort or pain
Ear discharge (often thick, white, black, or yellow)
A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
Decreased hearing
Sometimes a foul odor
Diagnosis
Usually diagnosed via:
Visual inspection with an otoscope
Microscopic examination or fungal culture (if needed)
Treatment
Cleaning the ear canal (very important—removes debris and fungus)
Topical ear drops
In some cases, a short course of oral antifungals
Avoid moisture in the ear during treatment
Prevention Tips
Keep ears dry (especially after swimming or showering)
Avoid overuse of ear drops unless prescribed
Don’t insert objects like cotton swabs into your ears
Use ear protection in water if you're prone to infections
